ONE OF HER WRITE-UP IS MENTIONED BELOW

Life has an uncanny way of teaching us lessons when we least expect them. Sometimes, these lessons don’t come from books, mentors, or years of experience. Instead, they emerge from the fleeting encounters we have with strangers during life’s unpredictable journeys.

The year 2024 was, without exaggeration, the hardest of my life. Career setbacks, broken relationships, family turmoil, and a pervasive loneliness enveloped me. I found myself adrift, weighed down by frustration, with no achievements to celebrate and not a single friend to lean on. I was lost, and my spirit bore the scars of disappointment.

One day, as I boarded a train from Howrah to Tatanagar, I wasn’t expecting anything more than a monotonous ride. With my headphones on and my music cranked up, I prepared to escape into a bubble of solitude. But the universe, as it often does, had other plans.

A stranger named Soni took the seat next to mine. At first, I did my best to ignore her, but she must have sensed my resistance. Perhaps out of boredom or sheer persistence, she struck up a conversation. Begrudgingly, I responded, not realizing that this ordinary exchange would shift my perspective in extraordinary ways.

Soni was no ordinary passenger. She seemed to intuitively understand my unspoken struggles. Her words cut through my defenses, addressing the questions I hadn’t yet found the courage to ask myself. As the train rattled on, she shared a piece of wisdom that would linger long after the journey ended:

"Value your peace. Some connections are meant to be short-lived. Relying too much on others takes away who you are. Be yourself. And if you ever get stuck, life will send another stranger to teach you what you need."

Her words landed with a quiet force, awakening something within me. For the first time in months, I stopped to reflect—not on what I had lost but on what I could rebuild.

When the train pulled into her station, I wanted to ask for her number, to stay in touch, to keep that connection alive. But Soni refused, offering instead a knowing smile. Now, I understand why. That fleeting encounter was all I needed. It wasn’t about creating a lasting bond with her; it was about forging a stronger connection with myself.

Looking back, I realize that not all lessons are meant to come from familiar places. Sometimes, the universe places a stranger on your path to help you see the light when all you can see is darkness. Soni taught me that peace is priceless, and self-reliance is the cornerstone of true strength. She reminded me that life, no matter how difficult, always finds a way to guide us forward—often in the most unexpected ways.

As the train continued its journey, so did I. But this time, I carried something new: hope, clarity, and the quiet resolve to be myself.

Life is full of journeys—some marked by miles, others by moments. And if we’re lucky, they’ll teach us not just where we’re going, but who we’re meant to be.
